Automate Your Roller Shutters for More Comfort and Security

No more chore of manual opening and closing morning and evening. Centralize the management of your shutters and simulate your presence during holidays.

Recommended Materials

  • Roller shutter modules (Wifi or Zigbee)
  • Screwdriver
  • Wagos (connection terminals)
  • Deep flush-mounting boxes (recommended)

Steps to follow

Step 1

This guide concerns roller shutters already electrically motorized (with a wired switch on the wall). If your shutters are crank-operated, you must first install a tubular motor, which is a heavier job.

Step 2

The principle is to add a small home automation module (micromodule) behind the existing switch, in the flush-mounting box. This module will receive orders (up/down) from the smartphone or voice assistant, while keeping the manual operation of the physical button for the family.

Step 3

Imperatively cut the power at the electrical panel! Dismantle the wall switch. Identify the wires: neutral (blue), phase (red), up (often black or brown) and down (often black or brown). Take a photo before disconnecting.

Step 4

Wire the module according to the supplied diagram (this is the delicate step, you must be rigorous). The module needs to be powered permanently (Phase + Neutral) and connected to the motor (Up/Down) and the switch (S1/S2). Use automatic terminals (Wagos) for connections.

Step 5

Once everything is put back in the flush-mounting box (it is sometimes tight, hence the interest of having deep 50mm boxes), turn the power back on and calibrate the shutter via the app. The shutter will make a full round trip to learn its top and bottom stops.

Step 6

Program your life scenarios: 'Opening at sunrise' (for a natural wake-up), 'Closing at sunset' (to keep heat in winter and secure the house).

Step 7

In summer, couple your shutters to a temperature or sunlight sensor: if the sun beats on the bay window and it is over 25°C inside, the shutter automatically goes down to 50% or in 'slatted' position to keep the house cool without air conditioning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it compatible with all brands (Somfy, Bubendorff...) ?

For standard wired motors (4 wires: Phase, Neutral, Up, Down), yes, it is universal. For proprietary radio motors (RTS, IO, Bubendorff radio...), it is more complex, you often need the brand's box or a specific multi-protocol box.

Can I close everything at once ?

Yes, that's the main interest! A wireless 'I'm leaving' button stuck near the entrance can close all the shutters of the house with a single click when you leave for work.

Precautions

  • Work imperatively with power off.
  • Check that you have the Neutral wire (blue) behind the switch. If it is not there (which happens), you will have to pull it from the junction box or choose a specific 'no neutral' module (rarer for shutters).
