Cleaning the barbecue grill encrusted with burnt grease
The chore of the day after the party... Cleaning the barbecue grill can be easy if you use the right techniques (heat, newspaper, onion).
Recommended Materials
- Wire brush
- Newspaper
- Onion or Lemon
- Baking soda
- Trash bag
Steps to follow
Step 1
The hot method (the easiest): leave the grill on high heat at the end of cooking for 10 minutes. The intense heat carbonizes fats and food residues (pyrolysis). Then scrub with a wire brush or a ball of crumpled newspaper while it is still hot (with a glove!).
Step 2
The onion trick: stick half an onion on a fork and rub the hot grill with the cut side. Onion juice degreases, disinfects and removes carbonized residues.
Step 3
The cold method (soaking): if the grill is cold and very dirty, put it in a large sturdy trash bag. Add a mixture of hot water and soda crystals (or oven cleaner). Seal the bag tightly and leave it outside overnight (flat). The next day, a simple spray of water is enough to loosen everything.
Step 4
The eco-friendly method: scrub with a thick paste of baking soda and water, let dry for 1h, then scrub with a hard brush.
Step 5
Don't forget to empty the ashes (once cold!) which are corrosive to the metal bowl if they get damp. Wood ashes can be put in the compost (in small quantities) or at the foot of rose bushes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put the grill in the dishwasher ?
Yes, if it fits! But remove the bulk with a brush beforehand so as not to clog the dishwasher filter with pieces of fat and charcoal.
How to prevent meat from sticking ?
Lightly oil the grill with a paper towel soaked in cooking oil just before placing the meat, when the grill is hot.
Precautions
- Wait until the ashes are completely extinguished (48h) before throwing them away.
- Do not use a wire brush on enameled grills (risk of scratches).
