Clean a Bathroom Mirror Without Fog or Streaks
An impeccable mirror that doesn't fog up when you take your shower? It's possible with this grandmother's trick.
Recommended Materials
- White vinegar
- Newspaper (or microfiber)
- Shaving foam (anti-fog tip)
- Potato (alternative)
Steps to follow
Step 1
To clean: prepare a simple mixture of 1/3 white vinegar and 2/3 lukewarm water in a spray bottle. It is the best glass cleaner, ecological and cheap.
Step 2
Spray and wipe with newspaper rolled into a ball. The ink of the newspaper (if it is real gray newspaper) has a polishing power that makes the glass shine and the paper leaves no lint, unlike paper towels.
Step 3
The anti-fog tip: apply a dab of shaving foam (or rub a dry solid soap) over the entire surface of the clean mirror.
Step 4
Wipe with a clean, dry cloth until the mirror is perfectly transparent again. The glycerin contained in the foam leaves an invisible film that prevents water vapor from sticking (fog does not form).
Step 5
Natural alternative: rub half a raw potato on the mirror, then wipe. The starch of the potato has the same water-repellent effect as glycerin.
Step 6
This protection lasts about a week (or until the next cleaning). Renew when the fog returns.
Step 7
Clean the frame too: dust often accumulates on top of the mirror frame. If it is a wooden frame, watch out for water running down from the mirror during cleaning. Protect the bottom of the frame with a dry cloth while you clean the glass.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my mirror have black spots on the edges ?
It is the oxidation of the silver layer (the backing) behind the glass, caused by moisture infiltrating through the edge. It is irreversible. To avoid it, always dry the edges of the mirror after cleaning and ventilate the room.
Is methylated spirit effective ?
Yes, to degrease a very dirty mirror (traces of hairspray, makeup, toothpaste), rubbing alcohol is radical and evaporates without streaks.
Precautions
- Do not wet the back of the mirror.
- Do not use abrasive products.
