Cleaning and sobering up a blackened wooden deck

Wood naturally grays, but if it turns black and slippery, it's moss/gunk.

Recommended Materials

  • Hard brush broom
  • Sodium percarbonate (or black soap)
  • Water

Steps to follow

Step 1

The phenomenon: Wood is a living material. Under the effect of UV (sun) and rain, it naturally becomes silvery gray. It's normal and quite pretty. But if it turns black, slippery or green, it is because it is invaded by micro-algae, moss and pollution.

Step 2

Simple cleaning (Black Soap): In a bucket of lukewarm water, pour a cap of liquid Black Soap. Scrub the terrace with a hard-bristled broom, always in the direction of the grooves in the wood. Rinse with running water. It removes the dirt and nourishes the wood a little.

Step 3

Sobering up (Percarbonate of Soda): If you want to regain the 'new wood' color (honey/brown), use Percarbonate of Soda (it's solid hydrogen peroxide). Mix 1 part powder to 10 parts hot water. Apply to the wood with a broom. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes (it will foam a little). Rub vigorously and rinse thoroughly. The result is spectacular.

Step 4

Beware of the Karcher: The high pressure cleaner is tempting because it is fast. But be careful! If you hold it too close (less than 50cm) or if the pressure is too strong, you will 'fluff' the wood (raise the fibers). The wood will become rough (splinters) and will become dirty even more quickly afterwards. Use it in moderation and at a distance.

Step 5

Protection: Once the terrace is completely dry (wait 2 or 3 days of bright sunshine), you can apply a protective oil or saturator to prevent water from penetrating. This will extend the life of your wood by several years.

Precautions

  • Wear glasses (projections).
  • Protect the plants around.
