Clean a TV, computer or tablet screen without damaging it

Modern screens are fragile. No glass product! No alcohol!

5 min read

Recommended Materials

  • 2 microfiber cloths
  • Water (distilled if possible)
  • White vinegar (very diluted)

Steps to follow

Step 1

Rule #1: TURN OFF THE SCREEN. We see the traces much better on a black background, and above all, this avoids creating short circuits if a drop leaks. Let it cool a little.

Step 2

Dusting (Dry): Before getting anything wet, pass a clean, dry microfiber cloth very gently over the screen to remove dust. If you scrub with a damp cloth while there is dust, you will create an abrasive sludge that will scratch the screen.

Step 3

Cleaning (Distilled water): Take a second clean microfiber cloth. Moisten it slightly with distilled (or demineralized, to avoid traces of limescale) water. Wring it well: it should be damp, not wet. Swipe it across the screen without pressing hard.

Step 4

Greasy stains (Vinegar): If water is not enough (fingerprints, splatters), mix 50% water and 50% white vinegar in a small bowl. Dip the corner of the cloth, wring out, and gently rub the stain. Vinegar degreases without damaging.

Step 5

ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN: NEVER spray liquid directly on the screen (it flows down into the frame and grills the electronics). NEVER use blue window cleaner (contains ammonia which attacks plastics), rubbing alcohol, acetone or paper towel (striped).

Frequently Asked Questions

Glasses wipes ?

Yes, provided they are 'Alcohol-Free'. Alcohol can dull some anti-glare or matte coatings on modern displays.

Touch screen (Tablet/Smartphone) ?

They are made of tempered glass, therefore more resistant to scratches, but they have an oleophobic (anti-grease) treatment which wears away. Simply clean them with a damp, chemical-free microfiber.

Precautions

  • Do not press hard (risk of dead pixels).
  • Wait until it is dry to turn it back on.
