Clean and Deodorize Your Kitchen Bin Lastingly

The bin is often the source of bad odors in the kitchen. Tips to keep it clean and fresh.

Recommended Materials

  • White vinegar
  • Soda crystals (or baking soda)
  • Essential oil (lemon, lavender, tea tree)
  • Long-handled brush
  • Garden hose or shower

Steps to follow

Step 1

Take out the full trash bag. If foul-smelling liquid has leaked to the bottom of the bin (the famous 'bin juice'), first absorb it with old newspaper or cat litter before starting cleaning with plenty of water.

Step 2

Take the bin under the shower, in the bathtub or outside if you have a garden. Rinse it first with hot water to remove the bulk.

Step 3

Prepare an explosive mixture: very hot water, a cup of white vinegar and a handful of soda crystals (more powerful and degreasing than baking soda). Warning, wear gloves because soda crystals can irritate the skin.

Step 4

Scrub the inside and outside of the bin vigorously with a long-handled brush (like a dedicated toilet brush or dish brush). Insist well on the bottom and corners of the lid where flies like to lay eggs.

Step 5

Let the product act for 15 to 20 minutes to disinfect well.

Step 6

Rinse thoroughly with a water jet or shower head.

Step 7

Let the bin dry upside down, ideally in the sun. The sun's UV rays are an excellent complementary natural disinfectant that will kill the last bacteria.

Step 8

Preventive anti-odor tip: once the bin is dry, before putting a new bag, place 2 tablespoons of baking soda at the bottom, or a cotton pad soaked in 5 drops of lavender, lemon or tea tree essential oil. This will neutralize future odors and scent pleasantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to avoid maggots ?

Maggots are fly larvae. They lay on meat or fish waste. Always wrap this protein waste hermetically in a small plastic bag or newspaper before throwing it in the large bin. Empty the bin more often in summer when it is hot.

Is coffee grounds useful ?

Yes, dry coffee grounds placed at the bottom of the trash bag can also help absorb odors, like baking soda.

Precautions

  • Wear gloves (soda crystals can irritate).
  • Do not mix soda crystals and aluminum.
