Cleaning a greasy fryer (tank and resistance)
The fryer is the oiliest appliance in the house. Here's how to get it back to like new.
Recommended Materials
- Flour
- Paper towel
- Degreasing dishwashing liquid
- White vinegar
Steps to follow
Step 1
The Fat Nightmare: The fryer is arguably the most painful appliance to clean. Congealed oil forms a sticky film that is impossible to remove with a sponge. Here is the gentle method.
Step 2
Drain the oil: If the oil is black or smells bad, throw it away. Pour it (cold!) into an empty plastic bottle using a funnel. NEVER throw it in the sink (it clogs everything) or in the toilet. Take the bottle to the recycling center (used oil bin).
Step 3
The Flour tip: Once the bowl is empty but still oily, generously sprinkle flour everywhere (bottom and sides). The flour will drink up the remaining oil and form a sort of dry dough. Wipe this paste with absorbent paper. Your tank is 'degreased' dry, without having soiled your sponge!
Step 4
Washing: Fill the tank with very hot water and add degreasing dishwashing liquid (or soda crystals for stainless steel). Leave on for 15 minutes. Scrub, rinse, dry.
Step 5
The resistance: If your fryer has a submerged resistance, clean it gently with a sponge and dishwashing liquid. Be careful not to get the electrical control unit wet!
Step 6
The exterior: To remove the greasy film on the exterior plastic, use a cloth soaked in household alcohol or pure white vinegar. It dissolves fat instantly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the basket sticking ?
If the metal basket is clogged with old brown grease, soak it overnight in a basin of hot water with soda crystals. The next day, scrub with a brush, everything will go away.
Precautions
- Never throw oil down the toilet or sink (clogs the pipes).
- Dry well before adding oil (water + boiling oil = explosion).
