Clean the rear grill of the fridge to consume less

No one looks behind the fridge. However, the dust that accumulates there prevents the heat from escaping.

Recommended Materials

  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Dry cloth
  • Brush

Steps to follow

Step 1

The principle: The fridge works like a heat pump. It extracts heat from the inside (food) and rejects it outside via the black grill on the back (the condenser). If this grill is covered with a thick layer of dust (the 'sheep'), heat cannot escape. The fridge is 'choking', the compressor has to run longer and harder to cool.

Step 2

Overconsumption: A dirty grill can increase the electricity consumption of the fridge by 30%. Additionally, the compressor may overheat and fail prematurely.

Step 3

Preparation: Gently pull the fridge to access the back (be careful of the floor). UNPLUG the electrical outlet for safety before touching anything.

Step 4

Cleaning: Use the brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner to vacuum up most of the dust on the black grid. For difficult corners and stuck-on oily dust, use a dry, long-bristled paintbrush or a used toothbrush. Wipe with a dry cloth to finish. Do not use water.

Step 5

Frequency: Do this cleaning once a year (spring cleaning is the ideal opportunity). If you have furry animals (cats, dogs), do it every 6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

My fridge is built-in, I can't pull it out! Answer: Built-in fridges have specific ventilation via the plinth at the bottom and a grille at the top of the cabinet. Be sure to check that these ventilation grilles are not blocked by dust. The air must circulate (chimney effect) behind the fridge. ?

Precautions

  • Do not twist the grille pipes.
  • Wait 1 hour before reconnecting if you shook it/lay it down a lot.
