Restore Shine to a Rug Without Dry Cleaning
Stains, pet hair, and dull colors? Learn how to deep clean your rug without industrial machinery.
Recommended Materials
- Vacuum cleaner
- Baking soda
- Sparkling water
- Soft brush
- White vinegar
- Clean cloths
Steps to follow
Step 1
Regular maintenance is key. Vacuum your rug at least twice a week, crossing passes (north-south then east-west) to dislodge dust at the base of fibers.
Step 2
To revive colors of a dull rug: slightly dampen a sponge with sparkling water and rub the rug gently. Let dry then brush.
Step 3
For deodorizing dry cleaning: sprinkle baking soda over the entire surface (about 20g per m²). Work in with a soft brush without rubbing too hard to avoid damaging fibers.
Step 4
Let the baking soda sit for several hours (or overnight). It will absorb grease and odors (tobacco, animals, cooking).
Step 5
Vacuum (maximum power if the rug supports it) to remove everything.
Step 6
In case of localized stain, act fast. Sponge spilled liquid with absorbent paper without rubbing. Then dab with a mixture of lukewarm water + white vinegar (or black soap). Rinse with a damp cloth.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wash a rug with plenty of water ?
It depends on the material. Synthetic rugs often support it, but wool or silk rugs fear water (shrinkage, color bleeding). Prefer dry or semi-wet cleaning.
How to remove embedded pet hair ?
If the vacuum isn't enough, use a window squeegee (dry) or a damp rubber household glove. Pass it over the rug, hair clumps together by static electricity.
Precautions
- Always do a color test on a hidden corner before applying liquid product.
- Do not walk on the rug while it is damp.
