Clean a Limescale Shower Screen Without Scrubbing

Do white limescale marks on the shower glass ruin your life? Here is the radical method to restore transparency.

5 min read

Recommended Materials

  • Hot white vinegar
  • Dish soap
  • Magic eraser (or classic sponge)
  • Squeegee
  • Spray bottle

Steps to follow

Step 1

Heat a bowl of white vinegar (30 to 60 seconds in the microwave). Heat multiplies the chemical effectiveness of vinegar against limescale.

Step 2

Mix the hot vinegar with a little dish soap in a spray bottle (the dish soap allows the vinegar to cling to the vertical wall instead of running off immediately).

Step 3

Spray generously over the entire shower glass. Leave on for 15 to 30 minutes. Do not let it dry completely (if it dries, spray a little more).

Step 4

Rub with a non-abrasive sponge (the melamine magic eraser is formidable on stubborn limescale without scratching). Insist on the bottom of the glass where the limescale is thicker.

Step 5

Rinse thoroughly with cold water (cold water makes glass shine).

Step 6

Immediately use the squeegee to remove the rinse water. This is the absolute secret to avoiding new marks when drying.

Step 7

The squeegee secret: pass it horizontally or vertically, but wipe the rubber blade with a dry cloth between each pass. This gesture avoids unsightly overlap marks.

Step 8

For daily maintenance: use the squeegee after EVERY shower. It takes 10 seconds and avoids 90% of cleaning and limescale formation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does dishwasher detergent work ?

Yes, dissolving a dishwasher tablet in hot water and scrubbing the glass with this solution is very effective for degreasing (soap) and descaling at the same time.

How to protect the glass ?

Once clean and dry, apply a water-repellent product (like Rain-X for windshields) or rub the glass with a cloth soaked in a little lemon oil or petroleum jelly. Water will slide off without sticking.

Precautions

  • Watch out for hot vinegar fumes (ventilate).
  • Do not use a green abrasive sponge which scratches the glass.
