Cleaning dirty sliding door tracks
Sliding window tracks are nests for black dust, dead insects and mold. Here is how to restore them like new.
Recommended Materials
- Vacuum cleaner (thin nozzle)
- White vinegar
- Baking soda
- Old toothbrush
- Butter knife + cloth
Steps to follow
Step 1
Start by vacuuming the bulk of the dust, dead insects and leaves with the crevice tool (thin) of the vacuum cleaner. Open the window wide to access all corners.
Step 2
Sprinkle baking soda generously throughout the track, insisting on the corners.
Step 3
Gently pour white vinegar over the baking soda. It will foam abundantly! It is this effervescent chemical reaction that will loosen the embedded black grime. Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes.
Step 4
Scrub vigorously with an old toothbrush to get into the smallest corners and under the edges of the track.
Step 5
To pick up the 'mud' formed by the mixture and dirt: wrap a damp cloth or wipe around a butter knife (round tip) or a flat screwdriver, and run it through the groove to scrape the dirt from one end to the other.
Step 6
Rinse with a little clear water (use a spray bottle or a small water bottle so as not to flood) and wipe immediately with paper towels or a dry cloth.
Step 7
If the water drainage holes (the small slots at the bottom of the frame) are clogged, unclog them with a wire or toothpick. This is crucial to prevent water from overflowing inside during heavy rains.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should the tracks be greased ?
No, absolutely not! Grease or oil trap dust and sand, creating an abrasive paste that wears out the rollers. Just clean the rollers if the window squeaks, or use a dry silicone spray (PTFE) that doesn't stick.
Precautions
- Do not flood the track (risk of infiltration).
- Do not use a sharp object that would scratch aluminum or PVC.
