Clean and Disinfect Switches and Door Handles

These are the most touched objects in the house and yet the most forgotten in cleaning. They are covered in bacteria. A simple gesture for health.

Recommended Materials

  • Rubbing alcohol (70%) or White vinegar
  • Soft cloth or cotton
  • Cotton swab

Steps to follow

Step 1

Never spray liquid product directly onto an electrical switch! The liquid could penetrate inside the mechanism and cause a short circuit or electrocution.

Step 2

Soak a clean cloth (microfiber or cotton) with 70% rubbing alcohol or white vinegar. It should be just damp, not dripping. Wring it out well before touching the switch.

Step 3

Rub the switch plate and the rocker button. Alcohol disinfects instantly, degreases fingerprints, and dries very quickly without leaving streaks.

Step 4

Use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol to clean grooves, corners, and hard-to-reach contours where black grime accumulates over time.

Step 5

Do the same for all door, window, and cupboard handles in the house. Pay particular attention to toilet and kitchen handles which are vectors of cross-contamination.

Step 6

Watch out for smart switches or touch dimmers: they are more sensitive to moisture. For them, use an almost dry cloth. Don't forget TV remotes and video game controllers which are often bacteriologically dirtier than the toilet bowl!

Step 7

This is a gesture to do once a week during routine cleaning, and every day if someone is sick at home (flu, stomach bug) to avoid contagion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does alcohol damage plastic ?

Rubbing alcohol is generally safe for hard plastics of switches (ABS, PC). However, absolutely avoid acetone or solvents which melt plastic instantly!

Can disinfectant wipes be used ?

Yes, it is very practical for this specific use because they are just damp enough. It is less ecological than a cloth, but very hygienic.

Precautions

  • Watch out for electricity: cloth just damp.
  • Do not rub too hard if the inscriptions are painted.
