Cleaning your toaster: removing crumbs and burnt material
Does it smell burnt when you make toast? It's probably an old charred crumb at the bottom.
Recommended Materials
- Paintbrush or old toothbrush
- White vinegar
- Cloth
Steps to follow
Step 1
The danger: Bread crumbs accumulate at the bottom of the toaster. As they heat up, they carbonize (releasing carcinogenic fumes) and can even end up catching fire. Regular cleaning is a matter of safety and taste.
Step 2
Safety First: Always UNPLUG the appliance before starting. Let it cool completely if you have just used it.
Step 3
The crumb tray: Most toasters have a small drawer hidden at the very bottom. Pull it. Empty the crumbs into the trash. Wash the drawer in hot, soapy water, rinse and DRY IT thoroughly before putting it back.
Step 4
The big shake: Stand over the sink or a trash can. Turn the toaster upside down and shake it gently (but firmly) to remove any crumbs stuck in the heating elements.
Step 5
The magic brush: For stubborn crumbs stuck to the interior grills, use a dry kitchen brush or an old dry toothbrush. Gently rub the grills (without forcing the heating wires which are fragile).
Step 6
The exterior: If the shell is stainless steel or plastic, clean it with a damp cloth soaked in a few drops of white vinegar to remove fingerprints and grease. Never run water inside! Dry well with a soft cloth.
Frequently Asked Questions

NEVER use a metal knife or fork to remove it, you risk damaging the resistance or electrocuting yourself (if plugged in). Use wooden tongs or Chinese chopsticks.
Precautions
