Clean a TV or Computer Screen Without Streaks or Scratches

Modern screens (LED, OLED, LCD) are fragile. The wrong product can destroy the anti-glare coating. Here is the safe method.

Recommended Materials

  • 2 quality microfiber cloths (tight weave)
  • Distilled or demineralized water
  • White vinegar (in very small quantity, optional)

Steps to follow

Step 1

Turn off the screen! This is the essential first step. You can see streaks and dust much better on a black screen, and it avoids electrical problems or thermal shocks with cold liquid on a hot panel. Let it cool down for a few minutes.

Step 2

Dust first with the first clean microfiber cloth dry. This is crucial: if you rub while there are still dust grains, you will drag them across the panel and create irreversible micro-scratches.

Step 3

NEVER use standard glass cleaner (blue), alcohol, ammonia, or paper towels (which are made of wood fibers and scratch). These chemicals attack the anti-glare or anti-UV coating of the screen, creating matte spots or peeling.

Step 4

Lightly dampen the second cloth with distilled or demineralized water (tap water contains limescale which leaves white marks when drying). Never spray directly on the screen! The liquid could flow by gravity into the frame at the bottom and fry the control electronics.

Step 5

Wipe the damp cloth gently over the screen, without pressing hard, making small circular movements. Start from the top and work your way down.

Step 6

If persistent grease stains (children's fingers) resist water, you can add a single drop of white vinegar to your water, but keep it very diluted. Vinegar is a mild natural degreaser.

Step 7

Dry immediately with the first dry cloth to avoid any residual water marks.

Step 8

Watch out for the corners of the screen: this is often where dust accumulates, but it is also where the electronics are most exposed. Never force with the damp cloth in the corners to avoid water penetrating by capillary action.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are special screen wipes good ?

Yes, if they are certified alcohol-free. But they are expensive and generate unnecessary waste. Microfiber and water are just as effective and more eco-friendly.

How to remove a greasy fingerprint ?

Warm moisture helps dissolve grease. Breathe on the stain (fog it up) and wipe with the microfiber immediately. This is often enough without product.

Precautions

  • Do not press hard on the panel (risk of dead pixels).
  • Do not use rough fabric (old dish towel, t-shirt).
