Dusting under the bed: tips for inaccessible areas

It's the kingdom of dust bunnies. Cleaning under the bed is essential for breathing well at night, especially for allergy sufferers.

Recommended Materials

  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Microfiber flat mop
  • Hanger + tights (tip)
  • Hair dryer (tip)

Steps to follow

Step 1

If your bed is high, the vacuum cleaner passes without problem. This is the ideal case, take advantage of it to vacuum during every weekly cleaning.

Step 2

If your bed is low or if there are drawers: it's a hassle. The vacuum cleaner doesn't fit. Use a flat mop with a microfiber cloth (often thinner than the vacuum brush) which will slide under more easily.

Step 3

The hanger trick (the best): unfold a metal hanger to form a long rod, put an old pair of tights or a sock over it. It is thin, flexible and electrostatic. Pass it under the bed to catch dust bunnies that cling to the nylon.

Step 4

The hair dryer trick: if you can't pass anything underneath (very low bed), use a hair dryer set to cold air (max power) on one side of the bed to push the dust to the other side, where you can vacuum it up easily.

Step 5

If you have an ottoman bed: empty it completely once a year. Dust infiltrates anyway. Vacuum the bottom of the storage and, if the bottom is removable (often loose boards), remove them to vacuum the floor underneath.

Step 6

Take the opportunity to check the condition of the bed slats and tighten the screws of the bed legs if necessary.

Step 7

Wash the floor under the bed at least twice a year (in spring and autumn) by moving the bed if possible, to eliminate dust mites and moth eggs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often ?

Once a month minimum for dust. Dust accumulates very quickly in bedrooms due to textile fibers from sheets and clothes.

Are under-bed storage boxes a good idea ?

Yes for saving space, but they trap dust between them and prevent air from circulating under the mattress (risk of humidity). Take them out to clean regularly.

Precautions

  • Watch your back when lifting the mattress.
  • Do not breathe in the raised dust (open the window).
