Deodorize and clean your kitchen trash can
The trash can is the nest of bacteria in the kitchen. Here's how to avoid bad odors.
Recommended Materials
- Baking soda
- White vinegar
- Essential oil (Lemon or Tea Tree)
- Brush
Steps to follow
Step 1
The observation: The trash can is the dirtiest place in the house. Meat juices, rotten peelings, soiled packaging... Bacteria proliferate and bad odors invade the kitchen.
Step 2
The big clean-up: Take out the bag. Take the bucket (the inside part) into the shower or garden. Fill it with hot water. Add a cup of soda crystals (or white vinegar) and a little dishwashing liquid. Scrub vigorously with a long-handled brush (dedicated toilet brush or dishwashing brush). Rinse and let dry in the sun if possible (UV disinfects).
Step 3
The safety bottom: Once the bucket is dry, pour 2 to 3 tablespoons of Baking Soda directly into the bottom, BEFORE putting in the trash bag. The bicarbonate will absorb any juice spills (leachate) and neutralize odors at the source.
Step 4
The freshness tip: Take a small piece of cardboard, cotton wool or a clay pebble. Pour over 5 drops of Lemon, Lavender or Tea Tree Essential Oil (Tea Tree, powerful antibacterial). Throw this homemade diffuser at the bottom of the trash (under the bag).
Step 5
The lid: Don't forget to clean the inside and outside of the lid with a vinegar sponge. This is often where midges lay eggs and where dirty hands leave marks.
Frequently Asked Questions
White maggots ?
It's haunting. Immediately pour boiling water mixed with white vinegar over the maggots to kill them. Throw it all away in the toilet or outside. Clean thoroughly. To avoid this: never throw meat/fish directly, wrap them in a small airtight bag or newspaper first.
Precautions
- Put on gloves.
- Do not mix bleach and vinegar (toxic gas).
