Fix a Zipper That Derails or Sticks

The zip is stuck or opens by itself? Don't throw the garment away, it's often repairable.

Recommended Materials

  • Dry soap (or candle)
  • Pencil (graphite)
  • Flat pliers

Steps to follow

Step 1

Case #1: It sticks and won't go up. It's often a lubrication problem. Rub the zipper teeth (open or closed) with a piece of dry soap, a white candle, or the greasy lead of a pencil (graphite is an excellent dry lubricant). Move the slider up and down several times to distribute the product. It should glide by itself. If you use a candle, choose a colorless one to avoid staining the fabric around the zipper.

Step 2

Case #2: It opens by itself after the slider passes (it derails). This is the most common problem. The slider (the pull tab part) has widened over time and no longer squeezes the teeth together enough. With flat pliers, squeeze the sides of the slider VERY GENTLY (top and bottom on each side). Go millimeter by millimeter and test. If you squeeze too hard, the slider won't move at all.

Step 3

Case #3: Fabric is stuck in the slider. Don't pull like a brute, you will tear the fabric. Gently pull the fabric perpendicular to the zipper while moving the slider up and down millimeter by millimeter to free it. If it doesn't come, try lubricating the stuck area with a little liquid soap to help the fabric slide.

Step 4

Case #4: Teeth are broken or missing. Unfortunately, this is irreparable. The entire zipper must be changed (sewing).

Replace it temporarily with a paperclip, a keyring ring, or a small string tie to continue using it.

Precautions

  • Go easy with the pliers (the slider metal is fragile).
  • Do not use grease (stains fabric).
