Making your own homemade glass cleaner: grandma's recipe

Recommended Materials

  • Empty spray bottle (500ml)
  • White vinegar (or household alcohol)
  • Water
  • Essential oil (optional)
  • Cornstarch (the secret)

Steps to follow

Step 1

Recipe 1 (The Classic): In a spray bottle, mix 1/3 white vinegar + 2/3 hot water. That's it. The vinegar smell is strong but goes away completely when drying. It's the base.

Step 2

Recipe 2 (Quick drying): 1/3 household alcohol + 2/3 water. Alcohol evaporates faster than vinegar and water, it's ideal to avoid streaks if you are not very fast with the squeegee.

Step 3

Recipe 3 (The Cornstarch Secret - Ultimate Anti-Streak): In 500ml of lukewarm water, mix 1 level tablespoon of cornstarch (Maïzena), 1/2 glass of white vinegar and 1/2 glass of household alcohol. The starch has a very fine abrasive power (invisible) which polishes the glass without scratching and absorbs greasy residues. Shake well before each use because the starch settles at the bottom.

Step 4

Always use clean microfiber cloths (washed without fabric softener, because fabric softener leaves a greasy film on the glass).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I have streaks with vinegar when they say it's magic ?

If you used an industrial product before, it may have left a layer of wax or silicone on the window. It takes a few washes with vinegar to remove this layer and find the bare glass.

Can we add dishwashing liquid ?

Just one drop, no more! Dishwashing liquid helps wet the window, but if you put too much, it foams and makes iridescent marks when rinsing.

Precautions

  • Label your bottle well.
  • Do not drink.
