Install a heat reflector behind the radiators

Why heat the wall that faces the outside? Return heat to the room.

5 min read

Recommended Materials

  • Radiator reflector film (aluminum + insulation)
  • Double-sided adhesive
  • Scissors

Steps to follow

Step 1

The principle (simple physics): A radiator emits heat in all directions (in front, but also behind). If your radiator is placed against a wall facing the outside (especially if it is poorly insulated), a large part of the heat goes to warm the birds outside. The reflective film acts as a thermal mirror and reflects this heat back into the room.

Step 2

Material: Buy a roll of special radiator reflective film (a layer of thin insulation + a layer of shiny aluminum). It costs around €10-15 per roll.

Step 3

Measure and cut: Measure the height and width of your radiator (the back part). Cut the film with scissors. Tip: Cut it 3 to 5 cm smaller than the radiator (in height and width) so that it is completely invisible once installed.

Step 4

Installation (Easy): No need to dismantle the radiator! Slide the film behind the radiator, with the shiny aluminum side facing the radiator (it does the thinking).

Step 5

Fixing: Use double-sided adhesive to stick it to the wall. If the film is magnetic (some models), it sticks itself to the back of the radiator (if it is steel).

Step 6

The result: The efficiency gain is estimated at 5-10% on an uninsulated wall. The room heats up faster and the wall behind it remains cold.

Frequently Asked Questions

On an interior wall (partition) ?

It is less useful because the waste heat heats the next room (or hallway). Focus on the front walls.

Precautions

  • Do not block the radiator ventilation grilles.
  • Do not use on electric toaster heaters (risk of overheating).
