Install a motion detector for lighting (corridor, WC)

The light that stays on in the toilet or the hallway is over. Comfort and economy.

5 min read

Recommended Materials

  • Motion detector (PIR)
  • Connected bulb or switch module

Steps to follow

Step 1

Usage: No more shouting 'Turn off the light!' In places of passage (corridor, staircase, entrance, WC, pantry, garage), the switch is a constraint. Automation is the ideal solution for comfort and savings.

Step 2

Equipment: You need a wireless (Zigbee or WiFi) motion detector (PIR sensor) and a connected bulb (or a switch module). You can also buy bulbs with an integrated sensor (all-in-one), but it is less flexible.

Step 3

Installing the sensor: Place the small white box high up (2m), in a corner, so that it 'sees' the entire room. Warning: do not point it towards a window (the moving sun can trigger it) or towards a radiator (heat movements disrupt the infrared).

Step 4

The simple scenario: IF Motion Detected THEN Turn Light On. IF No movement for 2 minutes THEN Turn off Light.

Step 5

The Advanced Scenario (Night Mode): This is where it gets awesome. Add a time condition. 'IF Motion detected AND it is between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., THEN Turn the light on to 10% intensity (or red)'. No more glare when you go to the toilet at night! Your eyes will thank you.

Frequently Asked Questions

It turns off when I'm in the toilet! Answer: Conventional motion sensors only detect LARGE movements. If you stand still reading, it cuts you out. Solution: move your arm every 2 minutes, or invest in a 'Presence Sensor' (millimeter wave technology) which even detects breathing (more expensive but infallible). ?

Precautions

  • Do not install facing a mirror (reflections).
  • Set the ignition duration to be long enough (2-3 min).
