Install a thermal insulating film on the windows (overglazing)
Do you have single glazing and don't have the budget to change? The window film is a stunning solution.
Recommended Materials
- Overglazing film kit (heat-shrinkable plastic)
- hair dryer
- Scissors
- Double-sided adhesive (provided)
Steps to follow
Step 1
The principle (Home double glazing): If you have old single-glazed windows and you feel the cold radiating through, glazing film is a stunning economical solution. This involves gluing a transparent plastic film to the window frame to trap a layer of still air between the glass and the film. It is this air that isolates.
Step 2
Preparation of the support: Thoroughly clean the window and especially the frame (the wood or PVC around the window). It must be clean, dry and grease-free for the adhesive to hold well. Use rubbing alcohol if necessary.
Step 3
Apply the adhesive: Stick the double-sided adhesive tape (provided in the kit) to the window frame, all around the window (top, bottom, left, right). Do not remove the top protection yet.
Step 4
Apply the film: Unfold the large plastic film. Remove the protective tape from the top. Stick the film on top. Then do the sides and bottom. Don't try to stretch it perfectly just yet, it will cause wrinkles, that's normal. The important thing is that it sticks well everywhere without any air holes.
Step 5
The magic of the hairdryer: This is the key step. Take your hair dryer, set it to hot and run it 5-10 cm from the film over the entire surface. Under the effect of heat, the plastic will shrink and tighten violently like a drumhead. All the creases will disappear before your eyes. The film becomes invisible and perfectly tense.
Step 6
Finishing touches: Cut the excess film that sticks out from the tape with a new cutter to make it clean.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can we see through it ?
Yes, it is very transparent, like a window. We barely lose 5% of brightness, but we completely eliminate the 'cold wall' effect when we pass our hand in front of it.
Precautions
- Do not touch the film with the hair dryer (it melts).
- Fragile to cat scratches.
