Installing a connected lock: advantages and installation

Open your door with your smartphone or your fingerprint? No more need for keys to go running.

5 min read

Recommended Materials

  • Connected lock (Nuki, Yale Linus)
  • Disengageable cylinder (IMPORTANT)

Steps to follow

Step 1

The principle: A connected lock (Smart Lock) is a small motor that attaches to your existing lock, inside the house. It turns the key for you when you ask it via your smartphone. From the outside, nothing changes (unless you change the entire cylinder).

Step 2

The ABSOLUTE prerequisite (disengageable cylinder): Before purchasing, check that your current cylinder is 'disengageable' (or 'with emergency function'). Test: put a key inside and try to open with another key from the outside. If it works, it's good. If it blocks, you MUST change the cylinder. Otherwise, if the connected lock breaks down or runs out of batteries, you will be stuck outside!

Step 3

Installation (Easy): 1. Insert your key into the lock inside. 2. Attach the smart lock mounting plate on top (either screwed onto the cylinder if it protrudes, or glued to the door). 3. Fit the motor unit onto the key. 4. Configure with the app.

Step 4

Magical uses: Automatic opening (Auto Unlock): the door unlocks by itself when you arrive in front with your arms full of shopping (thanks to Bluetooth). Virtual keys: send temporary access by SMS to the cleaning lady or a friend who comes to water the plants. No more need to make duplicate keys.

Step 5

Security: It's as secure as a bank (end-to-end encryption). The risk of piracy is almost zero. The real risk is losing your phone (but you can deactivate remote access).

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the batteries are dead ?

The app notifies you weeks in advance. If they are really empty, you can always open with your good old physical key from the outside (hence the importance of the disengageable cylinder!).

Precautions

  • Do not use on a door that closes poorly (the motor will force and break).
  • Always have a physical spare key from a neighbor or in the car.
