Recommended Materials

  • Video doorbell (Ring, Nest, Eufy...)
  • Drill
  • Smartphone

Steps to follow

Step 1

Usefulness: A video doorbell (or connected videophone) allows you to see who is ringing your doorbell directly on your smartphone, whether you are on your sofa, in the office or on vacation on the other side of the world. You can also speak to the visitor (“Leave the package behind the gate, thank you”).

Step 2

The choice of model: There are two schools. Battery models (e.g. Ring, Eufy) are very easy to install (no wires), but you have to recharge the battery every 2-3 months. Wired models (eg: Nest Hello, Netatmo) use the wires from your old doorbell for power, it is more reliable but the installation is more technical (check the voltage of the transformer).

Step 3

Installation: Fix the doorbell to the wall at approximately 1.50 m in height (eye level). If you're on battery, it's over. If you are wired, connect the two wires from the old doorbell. Download the app and connect the doorbell to WiFi.

Step 4

WiFi (Critical point): The doorbell is often outside, far from the Internet Box, behind a thick wall or a metal gate. Check that you have WiFi reception in this location BEFORE purchasing. Otherwise, plan a WiFi repeater.

Step 5

Security: Most doorbells also film as soon as they detect movement, even if no one rings the bell. This is an excellent surveillance camera for the entrance. You receive a 'Motion detected' notification.
