Install a connected thermostat to control your heating remotely
Turn on the heating before coming home from work? It's possible and it saves up to 15%.
Recommended Materials
- Connected thermostat (Netatmo, Nest, Tado)
- Screwdriver
- Smartphone
- WiFi connection
Steps to follow
Step 1
Why connect? : A classic thermostat heats up stupidly. A connected thermostat (Netatmo, Nest, Tado...) knows when you are there, when you leave, and what temperature it is outside. It anticipates the heating so that it's hot when you come home, without wasting energy when you're not there. Average savings: 15 to 20%.
Step 2
Check compatibility: Most individual boilers (gas, oil, wood, heat pump) are compatible. Access to two 'Thermostat' or 'Dry Contact' terminals on the boiler's electronic board is generally required. Check the thermostat manufacturer's website with the reference number of your boiler.
Step 3
Installing the Relay (Boiler side): 1. TURN OFF THE POWER. 2. Open the boiler cover. 3. Connect the small relay box to the 230V power supply and to the two terminals of the thermostat (by removing the 'shunt', the small wire which acts as a bridge). This is often very well explained in the instructions with color diagrams.
Step 4
Installation of the Thermostat (Living room side): The thermostat itself is often wireless (it communicates by radio with the relay). Place it on a piece of furniture or attach it to the wall in the main living room, far from radiators, the fireplace and direct sunlight (so as not to distort the measurement).
Step 5
WiFi configuration: Download the application to your smartphone. Connect the relay to your WiFi. Follow the steps to pair everything.
Step 6
The heating schedule: This is the most important. Define your attendance times (e.g.: 6 a.m.-8 a.m. and 6 p.m.-11 p.m. on weekdays, all day on weekends). The thermostat will manage the rest ('Away' or 'Eco' mode the rest of the time).
Frequently Asked Questions
What if the internet cuts out ?
Don't panic. The thermostat remembers the last schedule or allows direct manual control on the box. You will always have heating.
Precautions
- Cut off power to the boiler before installation.
- Keep the old thermostat just in case.
