Install a connected water leak detector (smartphone alert)
Be warned immediately in the event of a leak under the sink or behind the washing machine, before the floor warps.
Recommended Materials
- Water leak sensor (WiFi or Zigbee)
- Smartphone
Steps to follow
Step 1
The risk: A water leak is sneaky. A loose washing machine hose or leaking siphon seal can spill hundreds of liters of water in just a few hours, destroying the floors, furniture and ceilings of the neighbor downstairs.
Step 2
The solution: The connected flood detector. It is a small white pebble (the size of a macaron) equipped with two metal probes underneath. It simply sits on the ground. As soon as water touches both probes, it closes the circuit and sends an alert.
Step 3
Installation: No tools required. Place the sensor in strategic locations: under the kitchen sink, behind the washing machine, behind the dishwasher, near the water heater, and behind the toilet. These are the risk areas 99% of the time.
Step 4
Connection: Pair the sensor to your home automation box or your smartphone (WiFi or Zigbee). Test it by placing a wet finger on the two probes: you should receive a 'Leak detected' notification on your phone in less than 5 seconds.
Step 5
The ultimate automation: If you want 100% peace of mind, pair this detector with a 'Motorized water inlet valve'. Scenario: IF leak detected THEN close the general water valve immediately. Your home protects itself even if you are on the other side of the world.
Frequently Asked Questions
Battery life ?
These sensors consume very little (they sleep all the time unless there is water). The button cell battery usually lasts 1-2 years. The app will notify you when the battery is low.
Precautions
- Check the batteries once a year.
- Do not drown it completely (some are not waterproof on top).
