Maintain and Shine Varnished Wood Furniture
Fingerprints, glass rings, micro-scratches... Varnished wood is beautiful but marks easily. Learn how to clean it without attacking the varnish.
Recommended Materials
- Microfiber cloth
- Cold tea
- Linseed oil and turpentine (to renovate)
- Cork stopper (for stains)
Steps to follow
Step 1
For daily dusting, a dry or very slightly damp microfiber cloth is sufficient. Avoid commercial dusting sprays which often contain silicones: they shine at the moment but clog the furniture in the long run (sticky effect).
Step 2
To clean sticky or dirty varnished furniture: soak a cloth in cold black tea (brewed strong). The tannic acid in the tea cleans and shines the varnish without attacking it. Then wipe with a dry cloth.
Step 3
To remove greasy fingerprints: a little soapy water (Marseille soap) or vinegar water, but wipe immediately.
Step 4
To attenuate superficial scratches: gently rub the scratch with a cotton swab soaked in a mixture of half olive oil / half white vinegar. Or use a wax crayon the color of the wood.
Step 5
To remove a white ring left by a hot glass: it is moisture trapped under the varnish. Apply a little oil (or petroleum jelly) and rub gently with a cork stopper cut into a slice, or pass a warm iron over a cloth placed on the stain (carefully!).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can wax be used on varnish ?
No, wax does not penetrate varnish, it stays on the surface and will clog it. Varnish is an impermeable protective layer.
How to restore shine to old varnish ?
Cabinetmaker's 'popote' is a miracle product to clean and revive old tarnished varnishes.
Precautions
- Never use an abrasive sponge (green side).
- Do not place hot or wet objects directly on the wood.
