Motorize your existing roller shutters (renovation kit)
No more cranking chores morning and evening. Go electric without changing the entire shutter.
Recommended Materials
- Shutter motorization kit (axis + motor)
- Drill
- Screwdriver
- 220V electric arrival
Steps to follow
Step 1
The principle: Are you tired of turning the crank morning and evening? Good news: you don't need to change the entire shutter. Simply replace the axis (the metal tube around which the shutter wraps) with a motorized axis. We keep the trunk, the slides and the apron (the blades).
Step 2
Equipment: Buy a 'Roller shutter motorization kit' (around €100-150). Check the shape of your current axle (octagonal, round...) and its diameter (40mm, 60mm...) to choose the right kit. Also check the weight of your apron (PVC or Alu) to choose the power of the motor (10Nm, 20Nm...).
Step 3
Disassembly: Open the shutter box. Lower the shutter all the way down so that it comes off the axis (or unscrew the fasteners). Remove the manual axle and crank. It's time to clean out the trunk!
Step 4
Installing the motor: Cut the new telescopic tube to the exact width of your window. Insert the tubular motor into it. Attach the new engine mounts to the sides of the trunk. Place the axle in place and reattach the apron.
Step 5
The electrical connection: This is the delicate step. You need to bring a 220V power supply to the trunk. Either you have a socket nearby, or you have to draw a line from a junction box (under a trunking or channel). Comply with the standards (earth wire required).
Step 6
The adjustment: Once connected, you must adjust the 'end of travel' (the place where the shutter must stop at the top and bottom). On modern engines, this is done with the remote control. On the old ones, these are two small screws on the motor head.
Frequently Asked Questions
What about solar ?
If you don't want to do any electrical work (no bleeding, no wires), opt for a Solar Kit (300-400€). There is a battery in the tube and a small solar panel to stick on the trunk. It can be installed in 1 hour without touching the house's electricity.
Precautions
- Turn off the power before touching any wires.
- Check the weight of the apron to choose the motor power (10Nm, 20Nm...).
