Organize your kitchen cupboards to save space
Tired of taking everything out to grab the bottom pan? Optimize your storage.
Recommended Materials
- Airtight boxes
- Additional shelves
- Turnstile (Lazy Susan)
Steps to follow
Step 1
The diagnosis: Open your cupboards. If you have to move 3 packages to grab the bottom one, or if opened bags of pasta threaten to spill, you need to act. An untidy cupboard means food waste (we forget what we have) and stress.
Step 2
The big void: Empty EVERYTHING on the table. Clean the inside of the cupboards with white vinegar (to keep moths away). Throw away anything that has been expired for years. Give what is still good but which you will never eat.
Step 3
The jar strategy: Transfer all dry products (rice, pasta, flour, sugar, lentils) into transparent airtight jars (glass or plastic). Advantages: 1. It's beautiful. 2. We immediately see the remaining quantity. 3. It is airtight against food moths. 4. It stacks perfectly (space saving).
Step 4
Zoning: Organize by 'family'. A 'Breakfast' zone (coffee, cereals), a 'Cooking' zone (pasta, rice, preserves), a 'Pastry' zone (flour, sugar, yeast). Place the most used products at eye level and within easy reach. Heavy appliances (raclette, fryer) go all the way down.
Step 5
Smart accessories: Use 'half-shelves' (small metal trestles) to double the storage space in height. Install a turntable (Lazy Susan) for oils, vinegars and spices: with just one turn, you can access the bottom bottle without spilling anything.
Frequently Asked Questions
What about the expiration dates ?
When you transfer into a jar, cut out the date on the package and tape it to the bottom of the jar, or write it with an erasable marker on the glass.
Precautions
- Label the jars with the expiration date (tape under the jar).
- Do not overcrowd the shelves.
