Organizing a stress-free move: the retroplanning

Moving is a major source of stress. Good organization changes everything.

Recommended Materials

  • Boxes of different sizes
  • Wide tape
  • Bubble wrap (or old newspapers/linen)
  • Big markers

Steps to follow

Step 1

D-3 months (Administrative): Give your notice of departure (registered letter) if you are a tenant. Start sorting your belongings (don't move what you are going to throw away, it costs volume). Ask for quotes from several movers or book your rental truck if you do it yourself.

Step 2

D-1 month (Non-essential boxes): Start packing everything you don't use daily (books, decoration, off-season clothes, fancy dishes). Mark on EACH box with a big marker: the destination room (e.g. 'KITCHEN') and the precise content. Number the boxes to check that none are missing on arrival.

Step 3

D-15 days (Address changes): Report your change of address to organizations (Post Office for forwarding, Energy, Internet, Bank, Insurance, Taxes, Employer). Plan the transfer of your internet subscription (it can take time).

Step 4

D-1 day (Final preparation): Defrost the fridge and freezer. Unplug the washing machine (drain the water). Prepare a 'Survival Kit' that you will keep with you (not in the truck): pajamas, toothbrush, phone chargers, important papers, children's comfort blanket, cutter, toilet paper, first aid kit.

Step 5

D-Day (Departure): Read the meters (water, electricity, gas) of the old accommodation. Do the exit inventory. Clean briefly when leaving. Check that you haven't forgotten anything in the cupboards, attic or cellar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where to find free boxes ?

Ask supermarkets (early morning, fresh department), pharmacies, bookstores, or on donation groups between neighbors. Otherwise, buy moving kits.

Green plants ?

They travel very badly. Water them a little before departure (so as not to wet the boxes). Wedge them well in open boxes. Transport them in your car if possible, not in the truck.

Precautions

  • Do not overload large boxes (books = small boxes).
  • Protect your back when carrying (bend your knees).
