Remove a Price Tag or Sticker Without Residue
You scratch, it tears, glue remains... Here is how to remove a label cleanly.
Recommended Materials
- Hairdryer
- Cooking oil
- Nail polish remover (on glass/metal)
Steps to follow
Step 1
Heat (Hairdryer): This is the king method for almost all surfaces. Heat the label with a hairdryer (hot setting) for 30 to 60 seconds. The heat softens the glue. Lift a corner with your fingernail and pull gently. If it resists, heat again. The label often comes off in one piece without leaving a trace.
Step 2
Fat (Cooking oil): Ideal for paper labels on glass, ceramic, or hard plastic. Generously soak the label with oil (olive, sunflower) with a finger or brush. Leave on for 10 minutes (the paper becomes translucent). Rub with a sponge or cloth. The paper turns to mush and the glue no longer sticks. You can also use baby oil or peanut butter which are just as effective.
Step 3
Hot soapy water: For glass jars (jam, pickles), soak them in a basin of very hot water with dish soap for 30 minutes. The labels peel off by themselves and float.
Step 4
Stubborn glue residues: If sticky glue traces remain after removing the paper, rub with a cloth soaked in a little oil, rubbing alcohol, or lighter fluid. Oil is often sufficient and less aggressive.
Frequently Asked Questions
On a book or cardboard box ?
Hairdryer ONLY! Never use oil or water which would stain the porous surface. Heat and pull very gently.
On plastic ?
Watch out for solvents (acetone, nail polish remover) which can melt or whiten certain plastics. Prefer oil or hot water.
Precautions
- Do not burn the object with the hairdryer.
- Test solvent on a hidden area.
