There is some ink left but it no longer writes? The ink has dried at the tip. Here's how to make it more fluid.

Recommended Materials

  • Lighter (for ballpoint pen)
  • Vinegar or Alcohol (for felt)
  • Shoe sole

Steps to follow

Step 1

For a ballpoint pen (Bic):

Step 2

1. Heat (The lighter): The ink has dried around the ball and blocks it. Pass the metal tip of the pen under the flame of a lighter for 2 to 3 seconds maximum. The heat will liquefy the dried ink. Try to write right away.

Step 3

2. Friction (The Sole): Scribble vigorously on the rubber sole of your shoe (or an eraser). The rubber grips the ball better than paper and forces it to roll, repriming the ink.

Step 4

For a felt-tip pen or alcohol marker (Permanent):

Step 5

1. Alcohol: Open the marker from the back (if possible) and pour a few drops of 70° or 90° alcohol (or perfume) onto the ink pad. Otherwise, dip the lead in a little alcohol. The alcohol will dissolve the dried ink and reactivate the pigments.

Step 6

For a water-based marker (Child):

Step 7

1. Vinegar: Dip the mine in a base of white vinegar for 10 seconds. The acidity will unclog the pores of the mine.

Step 8

2. Water: Sometimes just a little water is enough. Soak, wipe, recap and wait 1 hour upside down.

Step 9

The centrifuge technique (For everyone): Tape the bottom of the pen to a strong string. Spin the pen very quickly above your head (like a lasso) for 30 seconds, point outwards. Centrifugal force will push the ink towards the mine.
