Reduce your water consumption in the shower (simple tips)

The shower represents 40% of the household's drinking water. A few minutes less means more euros.

Recommended Materials

  • Shower hourglass (or timer)
  • Shower stop
  • Eco pommel

Steps to follow

Step 1

The observation (The figures): A standard shower delivers approximately 15 to 20 liters of water per minute. A 10-minute shower therefore consumes 150 to 200 liters of drinking water (the equivalent of a full bathtub!). If you reduce it to 5 minutes, you save 100 liters per shower. For a family of 4, this is colossal over the year.

Step 2

The hourglass (Fun): Install a small 5-minute suction hourglass in the shower (or set a timer/song). It's very effective for children (and teenagers who daydream under hot water). The challenge: having finished rinsing before the sand runs out.

Step 3

The Shower Stop (Practical): It is a small push button or a valve that is screwed between the faucet and the shower hose. It allows you to turn off the water while soaping WITHOUT touching the taps. When you turn it back on, the water is immediately at the right temperature. No more having to set the hot water for 30 seconds each time.

Step 4

The eco shower head (Technical): Replace your old shower head with a 'Venturi' or 'Eco' hand shower. It injects air into the water to maintain pressure but reduces the flow to 6 or 7 liters/minute. You don't feel the difference in comfort, but the meter runs half as fast.

Step 5

Cold water at the start: Water that flows cold before arriving hot is often wasted. Put a watering can or bucket in the shower to catch it. It will be used to water the plants, fill the dog's bowl or flush the toilet.

There is no photo. A bath is 150 to 200 liters. A short shower (5 min) with an eco shower head is 30 to 40 liters. Bathing should remain an exceptional pleasure (once a month).
