Scenting your bed linen naturally (pillow mist)
Nothing beats slipping into sheets that smell fresh. Homemade pillow mist recipe and natural tips.
Recommended Materials
- Empty spray bottle
- Distilled water (or hydrosol)
- Alcohol (vodka or 70° alcohol)
- Essential oils (Lavender, Chamomile, Sweet Orange)
Steps to follow
Step 1
Homemade soothing pillow mist recipe: In a clean 100ml spray bottle (preferably tinted glass), pour 30ml of 70° alcohol or vodka (alcohol acts as a preservative and helps disperse the essential oil).
Step 2
Add 30 drops of True Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia), known for its relaxing and sedative properties.
Step 3
Fill the bottle with distilled water, mineral water or orange blossom hydrosol for a softer scent.
Step 4
Shake vigorously before each use. Spray on pillows, sheets and duvet about 15 minutes before bedtime to let the alcohol evaporate and keep only the subtle scent.
Step 5
In the linen closet: place sachets of dried lavender from the garden, grated Marseille soap in a small fabric bag (organza), or a piece of cedar wood which perfumes and repels moths.
Step 6
When washing: add a few drops of essential oil to a wet washcloth that you put in the dryer with the sheets during the drying cycle. Or use orange blossom water (food grade) in the iron's reservoir.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do essential oils stain sheets ?
Pure, yes, they can leave a greasy ring. But diluted in alcohol and sprayed in a fine mist from a distance, they do not stain.
Which scent to choose for good sleep ?
Lavender is the queen of sleep. Roman chamomile, mandarin, sweet orange or ylang-ylang are also excellent. Avoid peppermint or lemon which are stimulants.
Precautions
- Watch out for allergies and pets (cats) with essential oils.
- Do not spray on the face.
