Securing your home before going on vacation: the checklist

Don't leave with a knot in your stomach. Here are the essential points to check to deter burglars and avoid water damage.

5 min read

Recommended Materials

  • Electrical outlet timer
  • Vigilant neighbors
  • Alarm (optional)

Steps to follow

Step 1

Openings: Check ALL windows (even upstairs, even small toilet windows). Lock the shutters. Never leave keys on the inside locks of glass doors or windows (in case of glass breakage, the thief turns the key and enters).

Step 2

The garden: Do not leave ladders, stepladders or garden tools (shovel, pickaxe) lying around that could be used to force a window or climb upstairs. Store and padlock garden furniture.

Step 3

The mailbox: A box overflowing with flyers = house empty for a long time. Ask a trusted neighbor to collect it or have your mail temporarily forwarded by the Post Office.

Step 4

Water and gas: Turn off the main water supply (to avoid catastrophic flooding in case of a leak during your absence). Turn off the gas if possible. Unplug electrical appliances (TV, internet box, computer) to avoid lightning damage in case of a storm.

Step 5

Discretion on social networks: Do not shout on Facebook or Instagram that you are leaving for 3 weeks in Bali with the exact dates. It's a catalog for burglars. Post your photos when you return. Load your car discreetly (in the garage if possible).

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I close all shutters ?

Yes for physical security (delays break-ins), but it clearly signals that it is empty. The ideal is to ask a neighbor to open one or two from time to time, or to have programmable connected shutters.

Operation Tranquillité Vacances ?

It is a free service (in France). Register with the gendarmerie or police station. They will make random patrols in front of your home and check that everything is fine.

Precautions

  • Do not leave a key under the doormat (it's the first place looked).
  • Check that the alarm is activated.
