Securing your windows and bay windows (weak points)
Sliding doors open in 10 seconds with a screwdriver. Secure them easily.
Recommended Materials
- Sliding door lock
- Security bar
- Anti-burglary film
- Keyed handle
Steps to follow
Step 1
The sliding bay window (weak point #1): Standard bay windows are lifted and unhinged very easily from the outside with a simple screwdriver. Install a semi-automatic sliding door lock at the bottom of the leaf (it secures the two leaves together). Economical solution: cut a wooden bar or a broom handle to the exact length of the bottom rail and place it in the rail to physically block sliding.
Step 2
Classic windows: Replace standard handles with keyed handles (or push button). This prevents the burglar from opening the window if he breaks a small pane to pass his hand (manhole technique). You can also add surface-mounted auxiliary locks on the frame.
Step 3
Anti-burglary film: It is a transparent polyester film very resistant to stick on the glass (inside side). It transforms simple glazing into laminated glass. In case of attempted breakage, the glass cracks but remains glued to the film, considerably delaying intrusion (you have to hit many times to make a hole).
Step 4
Defense bars: For small toilet, bathroom or basement windows (often forgotten and easy to access), bars sealed in the masonry remain the safest and most dissuasive protection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Roller shutter or hinged shutter ?
The roller shutter (especially if equipped with automatic anti-lifting locks) is generally more difficult to force than wooden hinged shutters which can be torn off or cut.
The window restrictor ?
It is useful for ventilating safely when you are present, but it absolutely does not resist a strong push from an adult. Never leave a window ajar when you go out, even for 5 minutes.
Precautions
- Do not leave keys on window handles.
- Watch out for evacuation in case of fire (keep keys accessible).
