Turn Off Standby: The Switch Power Strip

The little red light on the TV, PC, coffee maker... All that put together represents 10% of your bill (excluding heating).

5 min read

Recommended Materials

  • Switch power strips
  • Master/Slave power strips

Steps to follow

Step 1

Phantom consumption: The little red light on the TV, the time on the oven, the phone charger plugged in empty, the computer in standby... All this consumes electricity 24/7 for nothing. It is estimated that this represents 10% of a household's electricity bill (excluding heating), or about 80 to 100€ per year!

Step 2

The Power Strip solution: Buy power strips with a lighted switch (red button). Plug all devices in the same corner into it (e.g., TV Corner = TV + TV Box + Console + Soundbar). In the evening, a single click of the foot turns everything off really. It is a simple gesture that quickly becomes a daily reflex for the whole family.

Step 3

The Desk Corner: Same. PC + Screen + Printer + Speakers. All on a power strip. When not working, cut everything.

Step 4

The Master/Slave Socket (Intelligent): It is a special power strip. You plug the PC into the 'Master' socket and peripherals into the 'Slave' sockets. When you turn off the PC (or it goes into standby), the power strip detects the drop in consumption and automatically cuts power to the slave sockets (screen, printer...). Magic.

Step 5

Devices NOT to cut: Do not cut the fridge (obviously), nor the internet box if you have home automation/alarm, nor devices that have an internal clock difficult to set (clock radio).

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it damage devices ?

No, on the contrary. Electronic components also wear out when they are powered in standby. Turning them off extends their lifespan and protects them from surges (storms).

Precautions

  • Do not plug too many powerful devices into the same power strip (fire risk).
  • Do not cut the fridge!
