Unclog a sink or shower naturally

Is the water draining badly? No need for harsh chemicals. The volcano method is often enough.

Recommended Materials

  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • Boiling water
  • Suction cup (if necessary)

Steps to follow

Step 1

The signs: The water flows slowly, it sounds 'gurgle', or worse, it rises. It's a blockage of soap, hair and grease that forms in the siphon.

Step 2

The Volcano Method (Natural Chemistry): Drain stagnant water if possible. Pour 1 cup (about 100g) of Baking Soda directly into the drain. Then add 1 cup of White Vinegar. It will foam very strongly (effervescent reaction), this is normal! Plug the drain with the plug or a rag to force the foam to flow down towards the plug.

Step 3

Exposure time: Leave to act for 30 minutes. The chemical reaction attacks the grease and limescale which hold the cork.

Step 4

The coup de grace: Boil 1 liter of water in a kettle. Pour the boiling water all at once into the drain. The thermal shock and pressure will carry away the softened residue.

Step 5

The suction cup (Mechanical): If it resists, fill the sink a little with water. Block the overflow hole with a damp cloth (very important to create a vacuum). Pump vigorously with a suction cup on the drain. The back and forth movement will dislocate the cork.

Step 6

Removing the siphon (Ultimate resort): Place a basin under the sink. Unscrew the siphon base (the U-shaped or bottle thing). Be careful, dirty water will flow. Remove dirt by hand. Screw it back in securely (check the seal).

Frequently Asked Questions

Destop ?

Avoid chemical drain cleaners (caustic soda). They are very dangerous for you, pollute the water, and can melt old pipes or rubber seals.

Precautions

  • Do not use boiling water if your pipes are made of very thin PVC (rare) or if you have already added a chemical product (risk of splashing).
  • Wear gloves.
