Unclog a Sink Naturally Without Chemicals

Water drains poorly? No need for toxic drain opener. The volcano method (baking soda + vinegar) is formidable for small clogs.

Recommended Materials

  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • Coarse salt
  • Kettle of boiling water
  • Plunger (if necessary)

Steps to follow

Step 1

Start by removing stagnant water from the sink with a scoop or sponge if possible. The method will be more effective if the product goes directly into the siphon.

Step 2

Pour a cup (about 100g) of a mixture of baking soda and coarse salt directly into the sink drain. The salt adds an abrasive action that helps scrape the pipe walls.

Step 3

Pour a cup of white vinegar over it. Warning, step back a little: an effervescent chemical reaction will occur instantly (it foams hard!) and release steam. This is normal, it is this 'volcano' that will attack the organic clog (grease, soap, food scraps).

Step 4

Immediately plug the sink with the stopper or a tightly squeezed wet cloth. This is crucial: it forces the carbon dioxide pressure to push downwards (towards the clog) rather than escaping upwards.

Step 5

Let the mixture act for 30 minutes to 1 hour. You may hear gurgling, a sign that the clog is working.

Step 6

Meanwhile, boil 1 liter of water in your kettle. Pour the boiling water all at once into the sink (after removing the stopper/cloth). The thermal shock and water pressure will evacuate dissolved residues and rinse the pipe.

Step 7

If the flow is not yet perfect, use a plunger: fill the bottom of the sink with a little water (so the plunger is submerged), block the overflow with a wet cloth (so air does not escape there) and pump vigorously up and down to move the clog mechanically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe for pipes ?

Yes, absolutely. Unlike industrial chemical drain openers (based on caustic soda or sulfuric acid) which release intense heat and can melt joints, glue or old PVC pipes, this natural mixture is safe for your plumbing and the environment.

What if it doesn't work ?

If the clog persists after 2 attempts, it is located further away or consists of a hard object. You will then have to dismantle the siphon (the elbow under the sink) to empty it manually. Place a basin underneath before unscrewing!

Precautions

  • Do not breathe vapors directly above the drain.
  • Do not use this method just after using an industrial chemical drain opener (risk of dangerous reaction).
